Tooth extraction, also known as dental extraction, is a dental procedure in which a tooth is removed from the mouth. There are several reasons why a tooth may need to be extracted, including severe decay or damage, infection, overcrowding, or to prepare for orthodontic treatment. The procedure is usually performed by a dentist or oral surgeon, who will numb the area around the tooth before carefully removing it from its socket in the jawbone. After the tooth is extracted, a blood clot will form in the socket to help protect the bone and gums as they heal. Patients are typically advised to rest and avoid certain foods and activities for a period of time after the procedure to allow for proper healing.
