Luiz is a character in the Gilbert and Sullivan operetta "The Gondoliers." He is a drummer and the personal attendant to the Duke and Duchess of Plaza-Toro. Luiz is secretly in love with the Duke's daughter, Casilda, and she reciprocates his feelings. However, their romance is complicated by the fact that Casilda is engaged to marry the newly-appointed King of Barataria, who is one of the two gondoliers who are the main characters of the opera. Luiz is a relatively minor character in the operetta, but his presence is important to the plot and to the comic misadventures of the Duke and Duchess.
