The euro is the official currency of the eurozone, which is a group of 19 European Union (EU) member states that have adopted the euro as their official currency. The euro was introduced in 1999 as a virtual currency and replaced the national currencies of the participating countries in 2002.

The euro is abbreviated as EUR and it is managed by the European Central Bank (ECB), which is responsible for setting monetary policy in the eurozone. The euro is also used as a reserve currency by many countries outside the eurozone and is one of the world's most traded currencies in the foreign exchange market.
