Valentin is a character in Charles Gounod's opera "Faust". He is Marguerite's brother, a soldier who loves his sister deeply and is protective of her. In Act III, Valentin learns that his sister has been seduced by Faust and challenges him to a duel. Faust, aided by Mephistopheles, kills Valentin in the duel.

Valentin's death is a turning point in the opera and marks the beginning of the tragic end for Marguerite. Before he dies, Valentin sings the aria "Avant de quitter ces lieux" in which he bids farewell to his sister and to his life as a soldier. The aria is a powerful moment in the opera, expressing Valentin's love for his sister and his courage in the face of death.
