A pancake race is a traditional event that takes place on Shrove Tuesday, also known as Pancake Day, in many countries, particularly in the United Kingdom. The race involves participants running while flipping pancakes in a frying pan.

The origins of the pancake race date back to the 15th century in the town of Olney, Buckinghamshire, England. Legend has it that a woman cooking pancakes heard the church bells ringing and realised she was late for the Shrove Tuesday church service. In a hurry, she ran to the church with her frying pan and pancake, flipping it to prevent it from burning. Since then, a pancake race has been held annually in Olney.

The rules of the pancake race vary, but usually, the participants must run a certain distance while flipping their pancake in a frying pan. If the pancake falls out of the pan, the participant must return to the starting line and start again. The winner is the first person to cross the finish line while still flipping their pancake.

Pancake races are now held in many towns and cities across the UK, as well as in other countries around the world, often as a charity event or a fun community activity.
