In the opera "Faust" by Charles Gounod, it is actually Faust who asks Mephistopheles to help him win the love of Marguerite. Mephistopheles agrees and takes Faust to a garden where Marguerite is picking flowers. Mephistopheles conjures a vision of a luxurious palace, and Faust sings the famous aria "Ah! je ris de me voir si belle en ce miroir" as he gives Marguerite a necklace.

Later in the opera, Marguerite becomes pregnant by Faust and is abandoned by him, leading to a tragic series of events that culminate in her death. Mephistopheles, as the embodiment of evil, plays a central role in the downfall of Marguerite and Faust.
