Hildegard von Bingen (1098-1179) was a German Benedictine abbess, composer, writer, philosopher, mystic, and visionary. She is best known for her contributions to music, theology, and natural medicine.

Hildegard was born into a noble family and at the age of eight, she was sent to the Benedictine monastery of Disibodenberg to receive an education. She became a nun at the age of 15 and later became the abbess of a convent in Rupertsberg.

Hildegard was a prolific composer and writer, and her works include music, poetry, plays, and theological writings. She is considered to be one of the first composers in Western history whose biography is known.

Hildegard also made significant contributions to natural medicine and was one of the first people to write about the healing properties of plants. She wrote several books on natural medicine, including "Physica" and "Causae et Curae".

Hildegard was also a mystic and visionary, and she wrote extensively about her experiences of divine revelation. She saw herself as a prophet and believed that she had been given a special mission by God.
